Matai Society is a registered society based in Moirang, Bishnupur district, Manipur. It works to address issues concerning the youth, women, queer and trans-led. It has been providing relief for the people displaced and affected by conflict since violence broke out in Imphal and its adjacent areas in May 2023. Along with other relief work they are engaged in trauma response activities amongst youth, women and children in the relief camps through recreational, psycho-social, nutritional and educational support. The Trust was approached for assistance to purchase a projector, white screen and audio equipment to be used for educational programs for the children, and also recreational and motivational content for healing the psychological and trauma induced mental health issues of the camp inmates.
Matai Society has started a livelihood project with the women taking shelter in the relief camps under the name of ‘Iyong’ where they engage the women to weave fabrics and make various types of bags. To increase the volume and develop the quality of the bags they required a number of heavy duty sewing machines in the relief camp workshops. The Trust decided to provide the machines to support and encourage the women.
